If you’re new to the world of fine and demi-fine jewellery, the difference between solid gold and gold plated pieces can feel a little unclear. But understanding what sets them apart can help you choose a piece that suits your life, your style and your budget.

At Periapt Studio, I use both solid gold and high-quality gold plating, depending on the intention behind the piece. Both have their place, and both can be deeply meaningful. Here’s what you need to know when deciding between the two.
What is solid gold?
Solid gold jewellery is crafted entirely from gold, usually mixed with a small percentage of other metals to make it strong enough to wear every day. At Periapt, I work most often with 9ct and 18ct gold, depending on the colour and longevity you're after.
Solid gold is beautiful, durable and made to last a lifetime. It won’t tarnish or wear away, and it’s the best choice for rings and pieces that will be worn every day or passed down through generations. It’s also an investment, which makes it perfect for bespoke heirlooms, engagement rings and forever pieces.
What is gold plating?
Not all gold plating is created equal. Most commercial gold-plated jewellery uses flash plating, which is around 0.5 microns thick and often wears off quickly.
At Periapt Studio, I take a very different approach. My Gilded Collection is crafted using:
-
2 microns of 18ct yellow hard gold plating
-
Over solid sterling silver
-
In small, intentional batches
This is a much thicker and higher quality form of plating than standard options. The hard gold plating process creates a more durable surface, which means the finish lasts longer and resists fading or flaking with proper care.

Gold plating like this gives you the look and feel of fine jewellery, at a more accessible price point. It’s ideal for meaningful pieces you want to wear and enjoy, especially if solid gold isn’t within reach right now.

So, which one is right for you?
If you’re looking for a piece you’ll wear every single day, or something that will become an heirloom, solid gold is still the most durable and long-lasting option. It can be resized, polished, repaired and passed on.
But if you're building your collection slowly or want something special that doesn't come with a fine jewellery price tag, gold plated pieces are a beautiful place to start. You still get thoughtful design, real materials and small-scale craftsmanship, just in a more accessible format.
That’s exactly why I created the Gilded Collection. I wanted to offer something handmade and meaningful for those moments when solid gold might not be possible, but the feeling behind the piece still matters deeply.
How to care for gold plated jewellery
To keep your plated jewellery looking beautiful, I recommend:
-
Avoiding water, perfume and lotions while wearing it
-
Removing it before swimming or showering
-
Storing it in a soft pouch or box when not in use
-
Gently cleaning it with a soft cloth
With the right care, your plated piece will age gracefully and hold its golden glow for years.
