Difference Between Moissanites and Diamonds

We are constantly asked what the difference is between a Moissanite and a Diamond. In terms of appearance, Moissanite resembles a diamond very closely. The GIA considers Moissanite the closest diamond alternative with a refractive index similar to a Diamond.

Moissanite is not a synthetic Diamond or Cubic Zirconia but a totally natural gemstone in its own right found in meteorites and is extremely rare. Due to the difficulty in sourcing natural stones, most Moissanite is lab-created.

Besides being durable and scratch resistant, they have a beautiful appearance and are an affordable alternative for engagement rings and fine jewellery.

In the following section, you will find a comparison between Moissanites and Diamonds.

Mohs Scale
Using the Mohs Scale of Hardness, gemstones are rated according to their ability to withstand surface scratching.

Moissanite
Scoring a 9.25 on this scale, making it one of the hardest materials on earth, perfect for an engagement ring that will be worn every day.

Diamonds
Scoring a 10 of hardness, diamonds are the hardest substance known to man.

Light Refraction Index
A stone’s brilliance refers to its ability to reflect white light

Moissanite
Moissanite stones have a refractive index between 2.65 – 2.69, which is higher than a diamond. They reflect light beautifully and are known for their fire and brilliance which is often a rainbow sparkle.

Diamond
Diamonds return light in three different forms: brilliance, dispersion, and scintillation, or surface sparkle. They measure a 2.41 - 2.42 on the light refractive index.
